Why does one bag last ten years and another just one season?
The difference is rarely in the look and almost always in the material and the stitching. The good news: you can check the quality yourself, in the shop, in a couple of minutes.
Five checks in the shop
- Smell. Genuine leather has a warm, natural smell. A sharp smell of plastic or glue means it isn't leather.
- Press with a finger. Press the leather. Genuine leather creases slightly and springs back quickly. Imitation stays smooth and stiff.
- Edges. Look at the edge of the leather on the handle. On genuine leather the edge is fibrous or neatly finished, not shiny like plastic.
- Stitching. Straight, dense and even stitches with no loose threads mean the bag will keep its shape for a long time.
- Metal parts. Zips and buckles should feel heavy and glide without catching. These are the parts that break first.

How to make a leather bag last for years
- Cleaning: wipe it once a month with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
- Care: two or three times a year, apply leather cream thinly and evenly.
- Rain: dry a wet bag at room temperature, never on a radiator or in the sun.
- Storage: stuff it with paper to keep its shape and keep it in a cotton dust bag, not in plastic.
