Why do your boots fall apart by January?
On the coast, winter rarely brings snow, but it does bring rain, humidity and slippery stone streets. So we don't choose boots here the way we would for the mountains. We look for a pair that handles moisture, doesn't slip and looks good with both a dress and jeans.
Here is what to check before you buy.
1. The sole: the most important detail you can't see in a photo
Run your finger across the sole. A rubber sole with grooves grips wet stone and asphalt. A completely smooth sole looks nice in the shop window but is tricky on wet steps.
2. Heel height for your day
- Up to 5 cm: for a full day on your feet, work, walks and the city.
- 5–7 cm: for the office and dinner, still comfortable for walking.
- Over 7 cm: for evenings out and special occasions, when you won't walk much.
If you buy only one pair this winter, a block heel up to 7 cm is the one you'll wear most. Take a look at our boots.
3. Ankle boots or tall boots?
Ankle boots are the most practical choice for our winter: they're easy to style, dry faster and go with everything. Tall boots are warmer and look more elegant with skirts and dresses.
For every day, choose ankle boots with a block heel. For an evening out, try a pointed toe or a slim heel. See all our ankle boots.
4. Material and care
- Leather lasts for years if you clean and waterproof it at the start of the season.
- Patent leather is the easiest to care for: a damp cloth is enough.
- Suede is the most beautiful, but it needs a protective spray before the first rain.
Dry wet boots at room temperature with crumpled paper inside, away from the radiator.
5. Size: try them on in the afternoon
Feet are slightly larger in the afternoon than in the morning. If you try boots on later in the day and leave room for a thicker sock, they won't pinch in January.
